Jim Hilgendorf, on GoogleBeing authentic while protecting against vulnerability is challenging. Trying to embrace change while doing so, double challenging. I’m hoping to share something useful that’s meant to resonate with others without relying on them to respond in any certain way. Hear (no pun intended) about my personal experience and growth from the vulnerability that I’m hoping to convey. 8 months ago, I walked into a day (to Mr.Calvin Trepp’s office) that would yield far more life changing effects than I naively would like to admit…. That day was a ripple effect of one of the most challenging “yeses” I had made just a few months before that. I had been invited to participate in the Food Network show, Guy’s Grocery Games. They were awaiting my contract. Why was I stuck on the fence? To go…or not to go? Why the hesitation? I had learned from one of the producers that I would be traveling solo (pre-Covid, I had been invited to travel as me PLUS a guest which had now been altered to NO guest). This turned my decision upside down. The thought of traveling solo was terrifying…but why? Independence has always been a strong suit of mine, so why the terrifying thoughts of traveling solo? It hit me like a ton of bricks. I had become dependent on my comfortable environment aiding to the handicap of my hearing. Every sound that could potentially escape me : Overhead boarding announcements at the airport; Verbal communication at security check; Checking in with the host at the hotel; Transportation communication; Directions/instructions from producers; and everything in between. Wavering. Avoiding. Shilly-Shallying. Whatever you want to call it, I had unconsciously fallen victim to it---in many aspects of my life, all due to the inability to hear. I went. It was terrifying. I didn’t miss any overhead announcements at the airport. I asked my chauffeur to repeat himself a million times. We joked, and he shared (boisterous enough for me to comfortably hear 🙂 ) his relatable story as a result from his previous services in the military. Filming on set was a little shaky, but I made it through. I’ll openly admit I didn’t fully hear the judges critiques until the episode was aired months later. I played along, nodding my head like I I actually heard the words coming out of their mouths. I went. It was terrifying. But, I went. I returned. My travel time home I spent reflecting on how much more enjoyable the experience could have been with one “small” change. I reflected on the ‘whys’ that held me back from visiting the audiologist. I foolishly dreamt that my hearing would correct itself. I foolishly led myself to be misunderstood. Foolishly, I was out of touch. Foolishly, I was scared of the change. If I only would’ve known years ago how those life changing effects from one simple (but very emotionally challenging) visit to see an audiologist (insert praises to Mr. Trepp here!) would literally be life changing, maybe I would have visited him sooner? I’m glad I didn’t hold back from the privilege and opportunity of a lifetime. It led me to the realization that I needed to seriously explore a change. It led me to Audibel & Mr. Calvin Trepp and his team. And they’ve led me to a life I didn’t know I was missing. I’m still a dreamer. I’m still misunderstood. I’m still out of touch. But I do all of these things with so much more confidence---becoming the me I truly am. Isn’t that the real privilege of a lifetime? Nothing stays the same. Change is constantly changing. Reflecting on my thoughts back from that trip, I vowed to embrace change. You can always change, change. You can’t make up for opportunities of a lifetime or lost time. For anyone questioning their ability to hear what’s going on around them……..GO. NOW. You truly have no idea how much your life will be changed.
Jessica Baldus, on GoogleExtremely helpful, informative and compassionate staff. Willing to go the extra mile.
Erin Niemeyer, on GoogleCal and his crew at Audibel are super. I stopped by for a brief cleaning and had some questions on my 3 background settings. I have a diverse life with many sound challenges. I’m involved in several music groups, I farm with loud equipment, and I’m involved with quieter settings in church. With each setting, Cal is able to tweak my hearing enhancements to give positive control of each environment. Calvin Tripp with Audibel is simply the best, yes, the best!!!

Carla Mikes, on GoogleRave! My mom is 92 and has been in the hospital for a few days. She needed her hearing aids cleaned so I contacted one of the hearing aid businesses here in Mason City. Since she just moved here a year ago, she didn’t buy them here, but she only needed them cleaned. i was told it would be $50 just to clean them and thought that was a little steep! I then called Audibel Hearing to see what they charged. I talked to a very helpful lady named Sue. She told me they cleaned hearing aids for free, no matter where you bought them. She told me to bring them in and she would have them done in about 10 minutes. She cleaned them, printed off instructions for me on how to care for the aids, gave me a case for them and also one to carry extra batteries in. They also carry a brand that my mom has so I will be taking them there for anything we need done. I couldn’t have asked for any better customer service so if anyones parents, grandparents, or whomever needs anything done with their hearing aids, Audibel Hearing Center is the place to go. Thanks again, Sue, for going above and beyond.
Our daughter would come into the room and ask why I had the TV so loud. It’s nice to be able to be in the room with others and not have them going crazy with the loud volume. It’s a good feeling to now have the sound come right into my hearing aids.
Being able to hear conversations the first time again, really understand them, was fabulous for me. Instead of asking my family to repeat themselves and try to visualize their lips as they talk, I had the opportunity to find that I just can close my eyes, listen, I would hear it and understand them.
